Nika was sat cross legged in the centre of the stark white room, the smell of disinfectant hung in the air and that odd stench which hung around hospitals and such. The stench of illness. Of decay. The stench of oncoming ruin. She seemed to be rocking forwards and backwards slowly to a steady rhythm, gaze fixed upon the door.
The walls of the room were all slightly padded to make sure she didn’t hurt herself when she had another of her ever more frequent little episodes. A small, square window was situated in the very top of the back wall, far out of her reach but enough to let the pale, silvery moonlight filter into the room. She was sat just out of the patch of light, to the side of it as if it would hurt her if she actually touched the pool of light.
Her lips were moving in an endless stream of silent words, forming the words but the sound never left her lips. It was fear that blazed in her eyes, predominately fear. She was sat wringing her hands together, her nails cut extremely short to try and prevent her harming herself again.
‘They’ were back again, inside her head, filling the room, she couldn’t tell which. Her whole body was beginning to tremble as her hands moved up and pressed over her ears, tears glittering in her eyes. “Go away…please go away…please…” she whispered, as if she didn’t dare speak. Her mother was cowering in the corner, bleeding, smooth skin stained with patches of purple, yellow and black. She was pleading her for help, begging for her to make it stop…to save her. However, she wasn’t the only one in the room. A large man was pacing around, cracking his knuckles. His face was a bright shade of red, anger in his eyes as he yelled, yelled at both mother and daughter.
A tear slid down Nikas’ cheek as she began to shuffle backwards, she needed to get away, to hide, but where? The room was a square. Just an empty square with her in it and he was coming towards her. Her back touched to the cushioned wall and he kept coming, footfalls loud in the almost empty room. He reached out towards her and a scream slipped out from between her lips, shrill and loud, echoing around the room before being absorbed by the walls.
