As the closing of Harry's years at Hogwarts drew nearer, the Wizarding world was in chaos. All the students waited in agony... waited to see if their parents would be there when they came home, waiting to see if the school would be attacked again... waited to see if the Boy Who Lived would turn out to be the Boy Who Saved All. Or something. When a whole year passed and nothing happened, everyone held their breath. Either their prayers had been answered and all was right again, or the Dark Lord was biding his time, waiting to take over.
Now Hogwarts alumni, Harry and his closest friends began searching for ways to rid the world of Voldemort once and for all. It took years until Harry, so sure of himself, found the last of the Horcruxes. After the items were destroyed nothing happened. In fact, ten years passed before anyone had seen or heard from the Dark Lord. Was he really gone for good? Everyone thought so, and Harry could settle down. Oh, and everyone else did, too. Former Hogwarts students found loved and made some babies. Life was good.
The rest of the story begins with the most unlikely person... Neville Longbottom, while working at a Petshop in Diagon Alley, overheard someone speaking about the return of Voldemort. Alarmed, he quickly contacted Harry and the other Aurors. The poor man was ridiculed and said to be insane. Voldemort was gone, after all. Longbottom had to be insane. Now the tables had turned. Harry was the one refusing to believe such an obviously fabricated story, and the only one who believed him was his wife. Too bad Luna Longbottom had her own reputation as being spacey, what with her running the Quibbler after her father's death. It was as though the entire world had turned its' back on the evil that, according to Neville, was still thriving.
Everyone should have listened to Neville. It was far too late when the attack came, and not a soul was prepared... except for Mr. Longbottom. Though still a timid and clumsy man, he managed to push his fear aside to help the people who mocked him years earlier. Harry felt ashamed that he shunned one of his friends, but what hurt his pride even more was that he had not saved the world... in fact, he almost put it in grave danger after claiming to have taken care of Voldemort. Oops?
A long battle ensued. Years passed, lives were lost, and it seemed like there was no end in sight... until he came. Voldemort, the cruelest wizard ever, was present at the battlefield. It didn't take a genius to know who he was after. Harry tried his best to fight Voldemort, but was having a difficult time. Timed seemed to stop when he was knocked down. Harry had been defeated. Just as Voldemort hissed the killing curse Neville came to the rescue. After all, Harry was the Boy Who Lived... he was the only one who could get rid of Voldemort.
A brilliant flash of green lighted the spot and everyone stopped their fighting to see what had happened. What they saw was so strange and almost unbelieveable. Harry lay on the ground, holding Neville's lifeless corpse as tears welled up behind his eyes. And what of Voldemort? He was destroyed. How? It turns out Neville was the final Horcrux. With him dead, Voldemort could no longer survive. The night he went to kill Harry he made sure he could not be defeated... he made sure part of his soul was in the other. This story ends with Neville being the hero.
